July 6, 2022

Every year I like to make some homemade gifts for my family and friends.  I make a list of gifts I want to make each year to give to my family and friends.  Things that are on my lists are homemade Vanilla extract, tea blends from my garden, handmade soap, a crocheted item or two, and a Christmas Ornament.

The Situation

I have noticed that as I have gotten older each year passes at a quickening pace.  I feel as though in a blink of the eye, we travel from February to December. Around October I would find myself in a panic to get my gifts completed, but would never quite make it.  I have many times bought gifts in place of the gifts I have not quite finished.

Planning

Plan to make certain things for Christmas that year.  Then allocate gifts to create each month.  Gifts that take longer to make, plan earlier in the year to give enough time.  If you haven’t already planned and been working on your homemade gifts for your family and friends, now is a great time to start.

Some gifts take time to create or time to develop.  For instance making extracts can take weeks or months to develop.  Soaps, especially cold process soap takes 4-6 weeks to cure.  Giving yourself enough time for that will improve the quality of your gift.

Reminders

I started putting reminders in my planner and phone calendar for each month reminding me of each gift I wanted to get finished.  For instance January is the month I have chosen for making extracts.   I schedule reminders to appear each day of the month to make extracts.

Reevaluate

July is a great mid point for me to reevaluate my timeline for what gifts I still have to create.  I am back from my summer trip and I’m ready to get back into the groove of it all.  I might even have some new ideas for gifts to add to the mix.  Do I still have time to make the gifts that I had planned previously?  Do I want to make different or additional gifts?

Conclusion

While planning out your gifts, try to make a list of gifts.  Then determine the amount of time you will need for the gifts to be ready.  Set reminders for each month of what gifts you would like to complete, giving enough time for creation and maturity.

I try to make a list of gifts I want to make throughout the year and who in my circle of loved ones would enjoy those gifts.  More so lately I keep a secret Pinterest board of those ideas.  This way I can have all my idea inspiration discreetly tucked into the same place.
